The fertile plains of the central part of the wine region of Moravia stretching from Brno to the town of Břeclav are among the sunniest and warmest places in the Czech Republic. Thanks to an ideal setting and favourable climatic and soil conditions, grapes were grown here as early as the time of the Great Moravia Empire. The main vine fields lead from the town of Hustopeče, a former main centre of the region, over Starovičky, Pavlovice, Bořetice, Vrbice and Kobylí to Velké Bílovice. Soils rich in magnesium agree primarily with purple cultivars: the area was made famous by its unmistakable red wines. The local Lemberger, purple in colour, with an aroma of cinnamon and morrelo, is especially renowned. The lighter, slightly spicy Blauer Portigieser deserves attention too. As far as white varieties go, it is mainly the Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Gris varieties which are popular. Remarkable wines in the area are made from aromatic varieties of Moravian Muscat and Gewürztraminer. Two cycling trails lead through the wine sub-region of Velké Pavlovice: The of Velké Pavlovice wine trail and the Brno wine trail.
